He walked toward the rain of the East sector with his hands slipped into the warmth of his pockets and gaze confidently forward to the blue glow of the barrier wall that now stood between him and his apartment. As he approached there were two of the automated IPS robots manning the gate, one of which seemed to be in the middle of processing someone’s request to pass.

“I’m sorry.” The drone stated in its synthetic voice. “Only registered, vaccinated citizens are allowed through checkpoints.”

“I am a registered, vaccinated citizen.” The man explained, but whether it was a database error or something else entirely the drone lifted a mechanical hand and pointed toward an area away from the checkpoint gate.

“Please proceed to the holding area and await vaccination.”

Zion failed to produce an ID or even approach one of the IPS drones and instead headed right for the entrance, which surprisingly drew little attention from the robotic guard. In fact, they seemed to barely acknowledge him as he passed effortlessly through the threshold and into East.

“Hey!” The citizen called out, spreading his arms in frustration. “Why does he get to go through and I’m stuck here?”

The second IPS drone began to approach the man as the first one spoke. “Move away from the checkpoint or you will be removed for endangering the safety of the larger population.”

“I’m doing what?! I’m a citizen! I have rights and I…”

The voices faded away to the round of rain as Zion moved deeper into East. Implementing a city-wide quarantine and checkpoint system for a few cases of a disease that largely only affected the homeless population, inconveniencing many and no doubt adding a black mark on his reputation, wasn’t exactly the option he would have picked. It wasn’t even really his idea, in fact. However it was the price he paid for gaining control over the IPS AIDs.

This turn of events would force him to become more involved in the situation, which he’d been distancing himself from because of his unfamiliarity with the medical field. His preliminary research into what had been happening had turned up little information, other than a few names involved. Perhaps it was time to go to AGIS himself and speak with those who’d worked on developing the vaccine, and the one who’d initially discovered the outbreak.
